The diffused museum is an integrated and polycentric institution, which develops its mission by combining an intra moenia and an extra moenia function with the aim to conserve, communicate and promote complex cultural systems. The Covid-19 pandemic seems to have enhanced the interest for this museum model, that has proven an outstanding flexibility and the capability to respond to many among the challenges that contemporary cultural institutions are facing. This article aims to depict the ongoing proliferation of the diffused museum, which is developing not only as a consequence of the current events but also as the fulfilment of a process that, in the last twenty years, has fostered its application into various themes, contexts and territories, and the consequent raise of new paradigms.
Keywords: diffused museum; contemporary museum; museum outside the museum
