Since 1989 the history of modern Germany has been profoundly rethought. In Germany this process has taken place within the context of the reunification of research, and in Italy in the light of new approaches to the issue of national identity, with significant attention devoted to the relationship between Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. These changes have led to a focus on the history and memory of National Socialism, on the history of the two Germanies, and on present day Germany.
