The author examines some aspects of the performance of Ettore Pignatelli di Monteleone as vice-roy of Sicily. Through archival sources, chronicles and parliamentary provisions the figure of the viceroy emerges as skilful politician, capable of pacifying the island after the riots that broke out at the death of Ferdinando the Catholic. Of particular importance is the analysis of the measures taken by the viceroy to defend Sicily from a possible attack by Turkish and Barbary states forces.
Keywords: Ettore Pignatelli, Sicily, Turkish, Charles V, Mediterranean.
