The proclamation of the Spanish Constitution in the Two Sicilies following the Carbonari movement in July 1820 did not interrupt the political activi- ty of the secret societies that had characterised the previous decade. During the eight months of the representative regime, clandestinity continued to be considered a political tool and democratic, liberal and reactionary for- mations moved in the shadows to change or overthrow the government. The documents from the Ministry of Grace and Justice fund in the Naples State Archives narrate the police investigations of the Neapolitan constitutional regime about a conspiracy of the reactionary society of the Calderari, pre- pared between December 1820 and February 1821. Although it finally had no practical effects, the action of the legitimist group sheds light on a composite network of action and recruitment and makes it possible to analyse the reasons - both political and personal - behind the politicisation of the different social groups involved in the project.
