The historiographical season on Mediterranean studies inaugurated in 2000 with the publication of The Corrupting Sea by Peregrine Horden and Nicholas Purcell has opened new perspectives that criticize Braudel’s idea of the unity of the Mediterranean space. New research also applies these perspectives to the Mediterranean in contemporary times in relation to the formation of nationalisms and imperialisms. This review discusses in particular Claudio Fogu’s recent volume The Fishing Net and the Spider Web: Mediterranean Imaginaries and the Making of Italians, and Valerie McGuire’s volume Italy’s Sea. Empire and Nation in the Mediterranean, 1895-1945, framing the two volumes within post-Braudelian scholarship. Both essays, published in 2020, emphasize the importance of the Mediterranean question in the Italian national imagination.
