The campaigns for the abolition of regulated prostitution were a training ground for the first generation of feminists: they mainly looked to the English women who, led by J. Butler founded the first abolitionist association. According to the abolitionists, the regulated prostitution constituted a serious attack to the freedom of all women and a reinforcement of male supremacy. In 1864, Anna Maria Mozzoni, pointed out the rules of prostitution among the forms of submission to be fought against. Early Italian abolitionism found in this battle the support of Mazzini himself and of the democratic circles who placed the female question in the context of national rebirth.
Keywords: Feminism, Mazzini, regulated prostitution, abolitionism, rights, male supremacy.
