The essay focuses on the first expedition of volunteers who embarked in Genoa at the end of May 1860 in order to join the Garibaldian undertaking in Southern Italy known as “the Expedition of the Thousand”. They were led by Carmelo Agnetta and were given the task of bringing new weapons and munitions. The enterprise of Agnetta gives the opportunity to reflect on the expeditions of volunteers who departed with the purpose of joining the red shirts throughout the Garibaldian undertaking as a whole. Moreover, the participation of such a number of men invites to reconsider how far the «masses» did not support the Italian Risorgimento. The author also brings to light some of the biographical itineraries of the volunteers who took part in the undertaking, as well as their voyage to Sicily on board the steamer Utile.
