Between 1919 and 1922, Italian cities were hit by an unprecedented wave of inten- se political violence, a sort of low-intensity war that contributed – among other things – to redesigning the cities’ places and identifying symbols. In Modena, right at the centre of all this, there were the places of the Jewish community: above all, Piazza Mazzini and its surroundings. The city of Modena ap- pears to be an interesting case study, on the one hand, to understand how the thrusts that agitated the country from the right (nationalism, daring, futurism, fiumanism, and so on) managed to converge in new forms of representation that attracted, in their orbit, even a non-marginal part of the Jewish community. On the other hand, to understand how those same trusts have constituted, on the contrary, a serious th- reat to another part of the community, which opposed Mussolini’s message from the beginning.
