The aim of this paper is to analyze the forms and times through which the stories and personal testimonies of asylum patients and the deinstitutionalization process have been used by journalists, intellectuals, medical personnel and social workers in the construction of the narratives of psychiatric institutionalization. In particular, it focuses on the use of the “voices” of witnesses in the public narrative to understand when and how they were used and passed beyond the walls of the asylums, ultimately redefining the inside-outside relationship and becoming memories. The analysis of television programs, journalistic investigations, publications and documentaries will enable a reflection on the relationship between the process of abandoning psychiatric hospitals, the memories of deinstitutionalization, and public opinion from the end of the 1960s to the 1990s, when the institutions were definitively closed. It will also make it possible to identify the main features and timing of this relationship, for the importance it has had, even in more recent years, in the production of specific public narratives.
Keywords: History of psychiatry, deinstitutionalization, witnesses, Italian psychiatric reform, Italian asylums, memories, testimonies of patients, oral history.
