The longer duration and better quality of life entail an increasing role of the elderly generation in the functions of the family, in an intergenerational solidarity that seems capable of providing strength and resilience. Aging is increasingly becoming a complex process that presents chal-lenges similar to those already faced in adolescence: a transforming body, the need to give new connotations to one’s own identity, the requirement to give new meaning to one’s existence and sociality. While some elderly indi-viduals prematurely experience isolation and fragility, the majority positive-ly navigate these transformations, enriching them with new family and so-cial roles. The author outlines the need to further study this new phase of the multigenerational reality of the family and identifies a series of instanc-es it presents: redefining relationships with adult children, healing inter-generational wounds, assuming the new and complex role of grandparents, facing the season of fragility, dependency, death, and widowhood. These are all instances that can prove to be opportunities for growth for all parties involved.
Keywords: family bonds, multigenerational family, elderly, ageing, life cycle, adult relationships, differentiation, PAFS (Personal Authority in the Family System), intergenerational wounds, grandparents, parents, grand-children, fragility, bereavement.
