The path of national integration following political unification proceeded with great difficulty, moreover, the considerable internal differences and the conditions of extreme hardship of some territories aroused a growing concern, fostering a wide debate not infrequently conditioned by an obvious anti-Southern bias. This favored the spread of a vast pseudoscientific literature influenced by the theories of the Scuola positiva di diritto criminale, which traced the extraordinary conditions of the South to an ethnic difference or to an anthropological regression, underestimating the socio-economic causes. In this context, the main official inquiries on Sicily also accepted some suggestions that referred to an alleged anthropological otherness.
