The essay examines the genesis of Hubert Jedin’s Storia del Concilio di Trento in the light of its relationship to the figure and work of Paolo Sarpi. Starting with Je- din’s 1976 lecture Come e perché ho scritto una Storia del Concilio di Trento, the contribution is divided into three parts: the first deals with when the Silesian scholar began to think about a history of the Tridentine Council; the second deals with how Jedin operated, in constant comparison with Paolo Sarpi’s Istoria del concilio Tri- dentino; the third part relates Hubert Jedin and the Tridentine Council to Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli/John XXIII and Vatican II, to try to understand why Jedin wrote his Storia.
Keywords: Jedin, Hubert; Sarpi, Paolo; Roncalli, Angelo Giuseppe (Giovanni XXIII); Trent, Council of; Second Vatican Council.
