Hubert Jedin advocated a conception of the history of the Church as a theological discipline; a vision which seems contradicted by the results of Jedin's work and also criticized quite severely by other historians. Verifying the resistance of Jedin's con- viction to the test of the most well-founded objections can indicate paths that are still worthful in the relationship between the history of the Church and theology.
