In this work, we started from a reflection with respect to the “Theories and Methods of Observation in Groups” course to arrive at an understanding of what it means to observe and train oneself to become a group observer. The group was both an object of observation and an instrument of reflection aimed at the co-construction of shared meanings. The observational grid was used to guide thinking. One describes the device: first conceived online, due to the limitations caused by the pandemic, and then in presence; what experiences and phantasms were elicited by the two different modalities? We spoke of frustration as a necessary affection to move from the illusion of an ideal device, to the acceptance of a real device; as a need to live united, cohesive and together, against the experiences of loneliness experienced during lockdown and distance learning, and finally as a catalyst for thinking about one’s professional identity. We then dealt with the loneliness inherent in observation, a necessary feeling to be a good psychotherapist because it forces one to come to terms with limits and one’s own narcissism. Finally, observation as an act of revealing and unveiling; what do I show, inevitably and unconsciously, about myself?
