This essay examines the applicability of the gravity model to urban and regional studies, with particular attention to the spatial dimension. The analysis builds on Isard’s theoretical framework and on subsequent developments by Harris, Tinber-gen, and Tobler. The main features of the model and its relevance for the analysis of interregional economic flows are discussed. Finally, the essay explores how digital technologies may affect the role of distance in spatial interactions.

Keywords: regional sciences; spatial analysis; Walter Isard; gravitational model; economic history.
