This single-case study aimed to verify whether Premature Triadic Music Therapy (PT-MT) can reduce the distress levels of both the preterm infant (hospitalized in a neonatal unit) and their parents. An infant with a gestational age of 34 weeks admitted to the neonatal unit was recruited. The infant participated in 5 sessions, while the parents attended 3 sessions. In each PT-MT session, the infant’s blood oxygen saturation, blood perfusion, and heart rate were measured at three time points (Pre-PT-MT, During PT-MT, and Post-PT-MT). The parents completed the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) at the beginning and the end of the music therapy treatment. The results showed an improvement in the infant’s physiological indices during the Pre-PT-MT and During-PT-MT phases. Moreover, these indices remained stable in almost every session at the end of the intervention (Post-PT-MT). Regarding the parents, the father did not show any change in his EPDS scores, while the mother reported an increase in distress at the end of the PT-MT. However, parents perceived PT-MT as a relaxing experience that allowed them to isolate themselves from the world for a few minutes. In conclusion, the results obtained from applying PT-MT in this study are promising for reducing distress levels in preterm infants.
