The paper examines the phenomenon of fake online reviews, with particular focus on the tourism and hospitality sectors. It highlights the central role played by reviews in shaping digital reputation and influencing consumer choices, and analyses the main civil, competition and consumer law remedies available against manipulative practices. Particular attention is paid to the commodification of reviews, the involvement of third-party reputation management services, and the increasing accountability of digital platforms. The study also considers the development of EU consumer law, the Digital Services Act and the recent Italian legislation aimed at combating fake reviews. The resulting framework remains unsettled and requires a careful balance between transparency, proper market functioning, reputation protection and freedom of expression. The paper concludes by stressing the need for proportionate legal tools capable of distinguishing fraudulent reviews from genuine criticism.
