This article analyses the role of modes of arrival in shaping the perception of Genoa’s urban and coastal landscape between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries through a corpus of French-language travel writings. The aim is to investigate how travelling by sea, land and later by railway influenced the representation of the city and the Ligurian Riviera. The study is grounded in landscape studies and adopts a geo-historical and comparative approach to travel literature. The analysis shows that arrival by sea played a privileged role in the construction of recurring images and shared perceptual topoi, while the advent of the railway profoundly transformed the experience and perception of the landscape. The conclusions also address contemporary transformations of Genoa’s waterfront and the possible weakening of the maritime viewpoint in the perception of the city.
Keywords: Genoa, travel literature, landscape, perception, mobility, waterfront
