Visual explanations are part of the tradition of systemic therapy. Multi-generation Genogram, Family Maps and Chronology of life events, as well as the procedures intertwined with their implementation, are to be regarded as drawings and practices stemming from the basic concept of the family life cycle. These graphical representations, linked to the names of Bowen, McGoldrick & Gerson, Sluzki and Minuchin, are peculiar to a systemic vision, regardless of the differing schools. In this article, a revision of these tools is presented, in order to adjust them to fit the changes of family structure in the last fifty years. Their systematic integration into clinical records, following the tradition of Selvini Palazzoli and her school, is considered a useful tool in training, supervision and professional practice as well.
Keywords: Visual explanations, "plurinuclear" families, family genogram, chronology, ecomap, clinical records.
