This paper explores the reconstruction of Skopje in the aftermath of the 1963 earthquake which, at the time, became an international testing ground for post-war architectural and urban planning culture. The task went well beyond the project for the city-centre in relation to the historical core. Reconstruction had to face the management of emergency and regional planning policies which all together challenged the geographical role of the city.
