The paper analyses the Italian experience, defined an "implicit pattern" of immigration management: the formal closure of the borderlines has in fact favoured a relatively easy entrance of immigrants, destined to fit into different labour market areas. In this context, the initiative of agencies and organisations of the third sector, has made up to the lacks of the public social policies. The author makes a distinction among three kinds of Italian associationism in favour of immigrants: charitable, claiming and entrepreneurial. This typology is analysed and discussed on the base of the results of an empirical research conducted, by the case studies technique, on twenty non-profit organisations in the area of Milan.
