Innovation and change are core issues in the sociology of work and organization, particularly in relation to the continuous development of new technologies. The paper aims to contribute theoretically and empirically to the research field of Innovation Studies. On the bases of an empirical case, the paper explores the emergence of a "new scientific object" - the pre-embryo - as an organizational innovation emerging from a network of heterogeneous elements distributed among the institutional setting, the professional communities involved and the assisted reproduction technologies. Adopting an approach to innovation inspired by the Actor Network Theory, the case allows to analyze a (failed) attempt of system (re)stabilization based on the network enactment. Elements of the network comes from membership in different professional communities, the mobilization of scientific knowledge and the production of a new discursive object.
