The authors suggest that integration is a false problem if cut off from the design of the system. Design comprises the community and its relationships and takes into account complex factors as guiding light. Thus context does not consist of a simple background, or frame - within which projects are built and integrated services are delivered - but becomes part of the design from which the different segments of the system draw their rationale. Hence, it might be more useful to emphasize the capacity to cross boundaries and build alliances. Integration then acquires an ethical bearing: i.e. social responsibility and belonging to a specific context. In this perspective social acknowledgment - through common values and paradigms - becomes critical, as it highlights caring relationships, in which each person becomes a key performer: i.e. as carer or as person being cared for. Complexity - as approach and key to interpretation - brings us to consider ‘relationship’ as an existential issue, agreeing to have "no knowledge of not knowing". The authors suggest that integration can then develop into a useful and concrete platform for professional practice and for the governance of institutions and of the entire community.
Keywords: Complexity, relationship, crossing boundaries, alliance, mental representation, prejudice, person, care, listening.
