The first associative forms of Italian entrepreneurs corresponded precisely to the economic structure of the country and therefore reproduced the considerable weight of commercial interests. The territorial contiguity between industrial plants, distribution networks and credit networks favored the establishment of associations with strong local roots. This is the case of the ‘Circolo commerciale’ (Commercial Club), born in Brescia in 1892 in a spontaneous, geographically circumscribed and organizationally weak way, in which both industrial and trading interests were represented, demonstrating a low degree of sectoral specialization. There were businessmans from industry, commerce and finance, but also members of the noble class who had started investing in industrial and banking shareholders. In a few years, the ‘Circolo commerciale’ became the operational center of an élite of economic operators from different political orientations who did not intend associative action only as a defense of their own interests, but tried to place it in the perspective of a broader ideological conception, setting common goals (moral, civil and social progress).
Keywords: Businessmans from industry, entrepreneurial associations, representation of business interests, economic party, Brescia.
