La stazione di servizio, un'architettura che ha attraversato tanti linguaggi artistici per la capacità di registrare nelle sue forme il "sentire" di un'epoca dai rapidi cambiamenti. Un'architettura che porta nella sua corporeità le tracce, i pensieri progettuali, persino le orme di chi l'ha vissuta, generando una narrazione quasi infinita di storie che si inseguono e stratificano. Riconoscere il significato che si nasconde dietro le permanenze di un paesaggio fondamentale per il XX secolo, quello delle strade e autostrade, quasi impone un progetto di conservazione e valorizzazione di quelle architetture. Un patrimonio diffuso che soltanto un'indagine attenta, come quella condotta, può far riemergere dall'oblio di cui ha sofferto sino a oggi. Uno studio utile non solo per la rapidità con cui lo stesso rischia di scomparire, ma anche per portare avanti il confronto su quale possa essere la corretta declinazione del patrimonio architettonico del Novecento. Un'analisi che è, di fronte a opere così diffuse e apparentemente anonime, ancor più necessaria per avviare una tutela, concepita non solo come difesa dell'esistente, ma come attività costante di conoscenza e opportunità di nuove progettualità.

Service station is an architectural genre that has involved the languages of all the arts, precisely because its forms have the capacity to register the "feeling" of an epoch of rapid transformations. It is, in short, an organism whose material nature carries the traces, the footprints, of those who have experienced it. It creates an ongoing narration of all the stories that follow one another, forming layers. To recognize the significance that underlies the lasting worth of the highway landscape leads us to appreciate the need for a project that will safeguard and give our heritage of road architecture the value it deserves. A disperse heritage that only this meticulous and careful investigation could make it re-emerge from the state of oblivion it has suffered till now. A real contribution to the comprehension of such a heritage seems evenmore necessary considering the rapidity this heritage risks to disappear for the loss of its function of for the consequent deterioration; it seems especially necessary to start a consideration, a critical confrontation, over its safeguard issues. A form of safeguard conceived not only as protection of the existing structures, but exactly as a constant knowledge process and opportunities for new architectural and planning projects.
