Factors influencing the use of non-timber forest products in cattle production under humid tropical conditions

Economia agro-alimentare

Fascicolo: 3 / 2022

As more attention is paid to the integral management and the problems of cattle production systems in the achievement of sustainable productivity and competitiveness in the territories of the Colombian Amazon region, it is necessary to determine the socioeconomic factors that affect the use of the potential and comparative advantages of productive units located in the region for nutritional supplementation from local inputs, such as Non Timber Forest Products (NTFP). For this purpose, a descriptive-cross-sectional scope with non-experimental design and quantitative approach study was carried out, applying the collection instrument to the sample size defined in a nonprobabilistic way in the municipalities of Albania San Vicente del Caguán, El Doncello, Puerto Rico, and Cartagena del Chaira of the department of Caquetá Colombia. Information was systematized using the R software, where the principal component analysis of the socioeconomic factors with the use of cattle nutrition in the NTFP was carried out. It was found that the factors that have the greatest impact on the use of NTFP are related to the degree of knowledge about NTFP and the strategies for the transfer of scientific knowledge as a complement to the knowledge of the producers.

Ecological and digital transition: “Travelling” in parallel for an everlasting future more sustainable

RIVISTA DI STUDI SULLA SOSTENIBILITA'

Fascicolo: 2 / 2024

The text emphasizes that achieving climate neutrality and sustainability requires the simultaneous pursuit of green and digital transitions. These transformations are essential for economic and social systems but come with significant challenges and trade-offs. Acknowledging the interconnected nature of environmental, social, and economic sustainability is crucial to achieving these goals. Efforts toward sus-tainability and digitization must prioritize inclusivity and equality. Transforming businesses through digital and green initiatives is key to post-pandemic recovery, revitalizing production, and supporting the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRP), offering a unique opportunity for sustainable development. The “double transition” (green and digital) is seen as a cornerstone for post-pandemic recovery, influencing international competitiveness and economic growth. Amid the current global energy crisis and rising costs of raw materials and energy, companies must adapt to remain competitive. Technological investments and sustainable produc-tion are crucial for the future stability of the production system in Italy, Europe, and beyond. The integration of green and digital solutions is identified as essential for creating a competitive, fair, and sustainable future.

Endogenous Institutional Change and Dynamic Capitalism

SOCIOLOGIA DEL LAVORO

Fascicolo: 118 / 2010

State-centered theory asserts that political institutions and credible commitment by political elite to formal rules securing property rights provides the necessary and sufficient conditions for economic growth to take place. In this approach, the evolution of institutions favorable to economic performance is a top-down process led by politicians who control the state. Hence, in less developed and poor countries, the counterfactual is that if formal institutions secure property rights and check predatory action by the political elite, then sustained economic growth would follow. The limitation of state-centered theory stems from the problem that behavioral prescriptions - formal rules and regulations - that reflect what politicians prefer can be ignored. In contrast, we lay out the bottomup construction of economic institutions that gave rise to capitalist economic development in China. Entrepreneurship in the economically developed regions of the coastal provinces was not fueled by exogenous institutional changes. When the first entrepreneurs decided to decouple from the traditional socialist production system, the government had neither initiated financial reforms inviting a broader societal participation, nor had it provided property rights protection or transparent rules specifying company registration and liabilities. Instead, it was the development and use of innovative informal arrangements within close-knit groups of like-minded actors that provided the necessary funding and reliable business norms. This allowed the first wave of entrepreneurs to survive outside of the state-owned manufacturing system. This bottom-up process resembles earlier accounts of the rise of capitalism in the West.

The article analyzes the unique group processes that occurred during a course training facilitators for interfaith dialogue. The group comprised participants from three religious identities: Jews, Christians and Muslims. Analysis of the findings indicates several important issues, the authors chose to focus on four main phenomena: From three identities to we and them, the third is excluded; religious identity and other significant identities of the individual and the group; ethnocentrism and the inter-ethnic-religious conflict; and situations of openness, curiosity and mutual learning. This experience showed the complexity in the dialogue between the three monotheistic faiths on the background of the national social conflict in which the Christians and Muslims, as belonging to the Palestinian Arab identity, are in conflict with the Jewish national identity. Key words: Interfaith dialogue, religious identity, inter-group conflict

Research Evaluation: Institutions versus individuals

RIV Rassegna Italiana di Valutazione

Fascicolo: 52 / 2012

All experts agree on that a good scientific level is a requisite to maintain a sustainable and healthy economic system in a country. It has been shown by many experts that the countries lacking of a good research system have a weak and unstable economic base. On the contrary, the instauration of quality research systems has been key factors to induce economic development. On the other hand, governments need to know the results of the funds invested in research and the efficiency of the scientific policies. All these facts prompt many politicians to afford the objective of improving the scientific research in their countries or regions, and often the first thing they request is an evaluation of the research system in order to have a complete overview, determine its efficacy and its accountability and take the best decisions (Kind, 2004). At a smaller scale, deans and directors of universities and research institutions are interested in evaluate their respective research programs and performance to be able to take decisions based on the evidences. In general, the administrators of these institutions have to deal with the following questions: what resources should I apply in scientific research, in which areas, fields or problems? And, how can I measure the efficacy and the outputs of the investment? The research evaluation is a controversial issue, there is not a universally accepted standard procedure able to fit all the needs, and nowadays is getting even more difficult as the methods to publish the results are rapidly evolving towards digital formats and internet dissemination (Abramo e D’Angelo, 2011, Rodriguez-Navarro, 2012). However, there are some common points in which one can find general consensus and some evaluation models that have shown to be efficient in many different types of scenery. In this short paper we would like to show some procedures that we consider could be used for scientific production evaluation. We also indicate some common misconceptions that should be avoided. We do not pretend to write an evaluation guideline, but rather our particular opinion from our experience, particularly in the Spanish context.

Changing family model, social capital and caring: how to reconcile? the case of Lithuania

SOCIOLOGIA E POLITICHE SOCIALI

Fascicolo: Suppl. 3 / 2012

The aim of the research presented in the paper is to explore the inter-relations between care processes and personal social networks as social capital in the light of the changing family models. Research of interdependence of care, social capital and family models is based on the idea of family practices suggested by Morgan. The main research question is what family practices of various family models create such social capital that ensure caring for its’ members? The research hypothesis is that participation in various activities together with family members and persons beyond nuclear and extended family create dense social networks of caregivers. The analysis is based on data of representative quantitative survey carried out in Lithuania between 2011 November-2012 May within the ESF supported research project "Trajectories of family models and social networks: intergenerational perspective". Research results only partly support this hypothesis: particular family practices create networks of caregivers, but in order to involve particular persons into network of caregivers, different family practices in various family models are needed. Usually, inhabitants of Lithuania primarily expect to receive care from persons who depend to nuclear family created through marriage and extended family arisen from this relation. But persons from whom it is expected to receive care and care received differ in Lithuania. In reality, caregivers usually are children in families with children and parents in families without children. Family practices that create social networks of caregivers, and are common for all family models include annual feasts like Christmas Eve, Christmas, Easter, All Soul’s Day, New Year party, Mother’s Day. Various family practices differently impacting creation social networks of caregivers for different family models but usually its include joint dinner daily, Sunday lunch together, vacations with family, communication face-toface, by the telephone or Internet, consultations on important decision-making, All Soul’s Day feast, Christmas celebration, Mother’s Day, Gatherings of relatives, Birthday, Name-day feast, visiting cultural event together.

Vidal Naquet, la memoria e la storia

PASSATO E PRESENTE

Fascicolo: 77 / 2009

Memory and History reviews two books - In the first, an autobiographical interview, L’histoire est mon combat, the A. underlines the civil and political commitment with which as an historian he reports the crimes, especially during the Algerian war, denied by the authorities, but revealed as the truth through his researches. His studies of ancient Greece are perceived in contiguity with his political and social interests. The second book, Les assassins de la mémoire collects the author’s essays on the negation of the Shoah; the detailed examination made by Vidal-Naquet of the arguments and attempts to destroy the Jewish memory are reviewed. On these themes Pierre Vidal-Naquet has also written one of his most interesting essays, entitled An Eichmann of paper.

The Global Roots of Modern Indian Radical Nationalism

PASSATO E PRESENTE

Fascicolo: 119 / 2023

The review takes as its starting point the book by Marzia Casolari In the Shadow of the Swastika: The Relationships Between Indian Radical Nationalism, Italian Fascism, and Nazism in order to look at the impact of global ideologies on the growth of interwar period Hindu radical nationalism (Hindutva), focussing on the transnational developments that influenced it. The tumultuous nature of Hindutva continues to have a stronghold in India even today, especially since the coming of a right-wing Bharatiya Janta Party government, which makes it even more important to study its origins.

The Fight against Tax Evasion and Avoidance

ECONOMIA PUBBLICA

Fascicolo: 3 / 2014

This paper focuses on Cesare Cosciani’s thought about tax evasion, tax avoidance and - more generally - tax compliance, which inspired the design of the tax system proposed by the Italian Commission for the Study of Tax Reform (1963-1964). The central point in Cosciani’s thought was the interrelation between tax design and the behaviour of fiscal offices. The role played by all the relevant players - taxpayers, legislator, administration - for the tax compliance is analysed.

The status of the simulative method in cognitive science: current debates and future prospects

PARADIGMI

Fascicolo: 3 / 2015
