The progressive British penetration in Mesopotamia was initially a matter of pri-vate interests, from trade companies which were interested in developing their relations with the Ottoman Empire. In the 17th century the Persian Gulf and Mesopotamia became an important way to India: the British interests prevailed on Dutch, French and Russian ambitions. When oil was discovered, control on that region came to have a new, and more precious, value. The will of retaining the Iraqi oil fields convinced the British government to challenge the raising Iraqi nationalism: a mandate was estab-lished after the First World War and the Iraqi independence was postponed.
