In the last years, Istat started a renewal process concerning all its surveys, many of which refer to enterprises and are finalised at producing output indicators. Among them, we mention the sample survey on retail trade sales, aimed at calculating and disseminating monthly index numbers with a shorter delay than the recent past. Notwithstanding that, we realise that in many practical cases and in the retail trade survey as well the correct calculation of an index number turns out to be difficult because of the lack of knowledge on enterprises’ death, start-up and transformation process. When monthly indexes are needed, just yearly data about births and deaths of enterprises are often available, so that the reliability of the index itself can be seriously affected. The aim of the paper is to propose some methods to estimate the amount of the existing retail trade operators, in order to correct the indexes concerning the value of sales concerning the only operators included in the panel observed every month. These methods are fully explained and compared on the basis of an empirical exercise.
