The essay argues for the thesis that the perspective of ethical relativism is important for the good functioning of democracy as a mean to the peaceful resolution of conflict, as Hans Kelsen stressed. In fact, only a widespread political culture informed by a relativistic conception of values, and consequently aware of the axiological options’ limits, more that any contitutional technique, avoids the abuses of power, proctecting citizens’ fundamental rights. Moreover, such relativistic culture, more than the rethoric expedients of deliberative democracy’s advocates, helps to accept democracy’s crucial aporia, that is the contraddiction between the majority rule and the principle of individual autonomy.
