The aim of this work is to measure the perception of power by three groups of entrepreneurs involved in the generational succession process, namely outgoing and incoming entrepreneurs and middle rank managers. In Italian small and medium enterprises, the entrepreneur is the leading figure and it is important to measure these subjects’ behaviour with respect to the concept of power during generational transition phases. In fact, even when all business and legal questions have been solved, the succession to the position of entrepreneur may remain a source of conflict. For entrepreneurs, power has various affective-cognitive dimensions that go well beyond its denotative signification and that could partly explain their reluctance to leave or assume the leadership of an organization.
