The present crisis makes it necessary to discover theoretical paradigms capable of reconciling economic well-being, social cohesion, and political freedom. This paper focuses on the perspective suggested by the Indian economist Amartya Sen and the American philosopher Martha Nussbaum, who are the pioneers of the capability approach, and discusses their inquiry into the normative dimension of both economic processes (§ 1) and the public sphere (§ 2), also pointing out the role of policies as means towards the promotion of models of development and living-together (§ 3). The underlying idea is that a shift in prevailing paradigms is possible only if the ethical dimension of both economic and deliberative processes is acknowledged.
