Workers "on the spot". Gender and precarious employment in Italy. In recent years there has been a growing insecurity of working experience of individuals. It is a phenomenon that has significant implications, both in terms of working lives and of social representations. Although the dynamics triggering gender discriminations have long been acknowledged in the analysis of men’s and women’s professional paths, the spread of non- standard jobs has emphasized some of their characteristics, sometime even in a paradoxical way. In this contribution we focus on the Italian context in which the spread of temporary contracts does not seem to have achieved the stated objectives, namely the increase of youth and women employment rates. In particular we will adopt an analytic perspective which looks at gender differences between those who experience situations of work uncertainty. Will be finally discussed possible policies in support of non-standard jobs, in view of a greater gender balance in professional careers.

Keywords: Gender, non-standard work, precariousness.
