The current article aims is to illustrate a methodology for analysing the social workers' competences. The model has been tested on 500 social workers of the Turin province in order to foresee the training needs but the obtained results suggest several other applications. In particular the analysis of perceived gap between social workers current competences (knowledges, skills, behaviours) and needed competences in order to reach excellent performances, could become an useful tool to improve work organization and human resources management. Moreover the analysis highlights also the job profiles differences related to environment characteristics and social services strategies, pointing out the directions for social policies changements.
