The practice of sport has acquired a great cultural, social and economic importance in today’s society. Such importance implies a need for a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the "Italian Sport System". In this paper we analyze contributes in this direction, with particular emphasis on ISTAT multipurpose surveys that defines the quantitative framework of the system. On the bases of annual and specific surveys from 1959 to 2011, different aspects of the sport system have been taken into account, focusing on gender, age and geographical area. An analysis of the preferences toward the various activities over time has been carried out: one of the most relevant results is that soccer, still very important, has been passed in the ranking by the various forms of exercise and fitness since 2006 We will conclude by describing the critical points of the Italian Sport System and underline how, in the last few years, the trend of the number of sedentary persons, also among young people, has started to increase after a constant decrease over time.
