The definition of hysteria is so broad that it includes the phenomena of possessions that take place in different geographical and cultural contexts. This article compares two different points of view on two different anthropological contexts. The first case concerns the study of Giordana Charuty in the French region of Languedoc. Charuty shows how, through life histories, care practices, and local symbolic classifications, the concept of hysteria should be historically and culturally contextualized in terms of a collective effort to classify the otherness within a particular social group. The second case concerns the cases of possession among the workers employed by multinational companies operating in Malaysia in the seventies. Through his ethnographic study Aiwha Ong argues that these complex cultural phenomena go beyond the attempts to medicalize women as "hysterical". Ong proposes to interpret the female possession as a form of "complex negotiation of reality" and "cultural struggle". In both cases examined here, there are "discontinued similarities" on the definition and contestation of gender identity that involve relations of power, gender and class.
