Some aspects of the history of psychiatry are critically discussed, particularly regarding the problem of diagnosis and the production of the DSMs of the American Psychiatric Association (its last edition, DSM-5, has been translated into Italian this year). The crisis of "diagnosticism" - namely of a labelling process based purely on the descriptive level - that started with DSM-III (1980) has become more apparent with the difficulties that surrounded the DSM-5 (2013) process and the polemics that ensued. Especially the halo effect, created by propaganda around the DSMs, has had negative repercussions on the state of psychiatry. Some considerations on the crisis of the psychodynamic approach and of its role in the history of psychiatry are made.
