While in the Anglo- American world women’s and gender history led to a real "refoundation" of the historiographical "common sense", in France and in Italy there has been widespread resistance to this new area of study. History journals are a testimony to this: they struggle to deal with the issues posed by women’s and gender history. At the same time, in both France and Italy there are two journals specifically devoted to the latter, «Clio» and «Genesis»; their experiences are here compared with those of a "generalist" journal such as «Passato e presente».
