This paper aims to sketch the essential lines of evolution on the phenomenon of the "liberalization" of railway transport in the European Single Market, investigating the peculiarities of the latest models of consumer (i.e. passenger) protection set forth by the European Union and the national legal framework. The analysis will take into account the recent creation of Transport Regulation Authority, examining the question of how such an authority is expected to interact with the other authorities already existing, especially given the powers and prerogatives that are attributed to it by Legislative Decree No. 70, dated April 17, 2014, which executes Regulation (EC) no. 1371/2007
