In recent years the issue of youth transitions has become relevant in the European and national public agendas. It has been faced with various solutions and initiatives, mostly focused on employability as adaptation/individual responsibility. Thus, young people are beneficiaries of the most restrictive forms of active policies that imply their availability to do any sort of job and to activate themselves by practicing various working experiences. Therefore, we need analytical frameworks that may help us to analyse the issue of youth transitions and to deal with the ambiguities of the policy framework. The article pays a specific attention to Amartya Sen’s capabilities approach, which in recent years has generated increasing interest as a framework to reformulate the issue of activation.
Keywords: Capability approach, school-to-work transitions, employability, informational basis of policies
