The comparison between the search and rescue operation Mare Nostrum, implemented by Italy, and the border control operation Triton by the European Union provides interesting insights for the analysis of the European approach to migration. Its core element (clearly observable in this case study) does not rest on the securitarian connotation assumed; rather, on the artificial construction of a tradeoff between internal security and the protection of fundamental rights, both key values for the European Union.
Keywords: Migrations, security, Mediterranean, Mare Nostrum, Triton, human rights
