Mario Dal Pra was a mastermind in philosophical thinking and in the conduct of life. His first specific philosophical experience consisted in the effort to decondition ethical action from cognitive premises of a metaphysical kind, which is still a valid position today. However the risk of an irrationalist impact was countered through his theoretical cooperation with Giulio Preti, which led to a scientific conception of the history of philosophy. During the last period of his work, he claimed that there is the need to individuate forms of thinking which influence philosophical eras. His work remains a major contribution to Italian philosophy in the 20th century.
