The documentary film Togliatti(grad) tells the foundation of the huge factory-town of Togliatti, built in the late 60’s in the heart of the Russian steppes in just thirty six months; an operation which put side by side, in an economic joint venture, Fiat, the biggest italian cars factory group, and the communist Soviet Union. Among the images of the present and the past, through the voices of Italian and Russian protagonists, the story explores the preparation, the implementation and the effects of an operation that had to show and measure, under the eye of international public opinion, the power of the two dominant ideologies of the second half of the twentieth century. Exploring an era in which cultural industry and culture of industry complemented each other, the story also explores the path of a generation of men and women grew up "with "and "for" work; a path culminated in a personal balance of victories and defeats.

Keywords: Fiat, Togliatti, Togliattigrad, Soviet Union, car, car factory.
