Italian cities make current economic crisis visible and transfer its heavy effects in people daily life. Growing social inequalities, mass unemployment, new social and ethnic marginalities, reduction of families’ buying power are producing long lasting effects on urban forms and on city social organization. In such a scenario many of the contemporary flamboyant strategies - e.g. the city as a growth machine, the creative city, the smart city, etc. - aimed to better city life are worsening conditions of growing segments of population. This is why nowadays it is urgent going back to the Henri Lefebvre’s claim of Right to the city whose content must be updated in order to tackle with contemporary crisis.

Keywords: Crisis, urban form, social organization, inequalities, marginalities, right to the city.
