The article examines the historiographical debate about the legitimation of violence during the Italian Resistance, taking into account the point of view of Catholics. The issue has been the object of an intense political debate in the post-World War II period, especially in the context of the fiftieth anniversary of the Liberation, and relates to the different forms of opposition carried out by Catholics between 1943 and 1945. The texts selected for this article concern Catholic partisans, and focus on a variety of issues, ranging from the "moment of choice" to the practice of partisan violence. This is only one aspect of a much wider picture of the religious dimension of the Resistance, the different forms of struggle and the contribution of Catholics. In the conclusion, the article presents some hypothesis for future research on the issue of morality and its religious aspects.
