In his contribution, describing how gender develops in the fetal body and brain, and showing how complicated - almost impossible - it is to decide exactly what distinguishes male from female, Mark Solms has attempted to demonstrate that environmental and genetic influences are absolutely inextricable. In this perspective the Freudian concept of comple-mental series, term used as a principle to explain human behaviour as the result of comple-mentary interplay of nature and nurture, fits with current evidence in scientific literature about the biological complexity of gender identity and sexual orientation.
Keywords: Gender, development, nature, nurture, complemental series
