During the second half of the XVIIth century, the foreign policy of the Duchy of Savoy developed on several fronts and not only in relation to France, as it is commonly believed. In this sense, the regent Maria Giovanna Battista di Savoia Nemorus played a fundamental role in the development of an international diplomatic network, of which her son Vittorio Amedeo II later benefited. She tried to improve an autonomous policy both from Paris and from Madrid and Vienna and her main purpose was to keep peace. This political neutrality should not be interpreted as a sign of political weakness.
