The article investigates the ageing of female migrant workers employed in the sector of domestic and care services, comparing two migratory flows involving middle-aged women: Ukrainians in Italy and Peruvians in Spain. The analysis takes into consideration the relationship between ageing and migratory processes. The essay shows, on the one side, how the origin countries’ insufficient retirement schemes are an important reason of emigration and, on the other side, what are the retirement scenarios for Ukrainian and Peruvian migrant workers, highlighting the risk to become poor pensioners. The analysis is based on data collected during an extended period, with qualitative methodologies, such as semi-structured interviews, open conversations, participant observations and multi-sited ethnographies.
Keywords: Ageing; retirement; domestic workers; Ukraine; Peru.
