This contribution deals with the relation among urban planning and public facilities’ planning through the perspective of school buildings and areas. It proposes an overview on spatial production and transformation of the legacy of schools which were built in the city of Milan throughout the second half of the 20th century, and develops it by crossing town planning tools, technical competences, administrative procedures and sectoral programs. With a special focus on the period encompassing the Italian ‘planning standards’ decree, the paper highlights some recent tendencies in the transformation of the widespread network of school buildings and areas in Italy, and proposes some operative paths for the fragilities and strategic potentialities of this heritage at different scales.
Keywords: Planning standards; public facilites planning; school buildings
