Little is known about the effectiveness of housing services on mental health problems. The aim of the following study is to evaluate how perceived choice concerning different aspects of the service, founding element in the Housing First model, affects the severity of psychiatric symptoms in an Italian sample of 84 users. The mechanism proposed to explain the action of the program is through "empowerment", operationalised as sense of control that the person feels to have on his/her own life. Finding showed that empowerment is positively associated to perceived choice and, since it’s an important protective factor for mental health, it mediates the positive relation between choice and psychiatric symptoms.

Keywords: Homelessness, housing first, psychiatric symptoms, perceived choice, empower-ment, control.
