The author presents his clinical experience with a female patient that led fim to face intense countertransference experiences and challenges for his technique and for his theoretical references. In the therapeutic process, the conflicts about grief and loss in the patient are intertwined with the necessary capacity that the therapist must find in grieving himself, regarding idealiza tions about his own profession. Therefore, the "playing to lose" is a skill that develops in both partecipants in the therapeutic process.

Keywords: play, loss, grief, countertransference, transfert, idealization.
